Hong Kong Stock Market Summary

Mainland Q1 GDP growth was 7%, in line with expectations. The HSI opened up 131 pts yesterday and wavered afterwards, once dropped over 100 pts, and closed at 27,618, up 57 pts. The main board turnover was HK$216.2bn.

China banks advanced. ICBC (1398) rose 4.9% to HK$6.91, and CCB (939) and BANKCOMM (3328) rose 4.4% and 4.3%, becoming the top 3 gainers of the HSI. Railway shares gained as well. CNR (6199) and CSR (1766) jumped 5.6% and 4.4%. CHINA RAILWAY (390) climbed 2.1%. Macau gaming shares remained weak. SANDS CHINA (1928) and GALAXY ENT (27) fell 2.5% and 2%. Alibaba Group will transfer the operating rights for online pharmaceutical business to AIL HEALTH (241). The latter share price soared 80.8% to HK$12.26, the steepest gain of the day.
